What is a Dental Canal?
This is a cavity inside the tooth root filled with pulp (soft tissue), which contains nerve fibers. This tiny passage branches off from the coronal portion, heading vertically down until it reaches the root tip.
Blood capillaries and nerves pass through the canals to the pulp. All teeth have one to four root canals.
Why Treat Root Canals?

When is Root Canals Treatment Required?
This is a treatment of a tooth’s internal cavities, most often the area occupied by nerve endings, or pulp. The main reason for filling dental canals is the need to eliminate the infection that has penetrated them.
As a rule, this dental manipulation is performed when:
- There is a tooth decay complication.
- The patient has pulpitis ー inflammation of tooth internal tissue.
- There is inflammation of the periodontal tissues surrounding the tooth and holding it in the alveolus.
Pain and gum swelling signal that root canals need treatment. The disease can become chronic, and the patient may not experience pain, but root canal treatment is still required.

Root canal treatment usually involves one to three visits.
During the initial visit, a general dentist carefully examines the oral cavity and conducts all necessary medical tests. If there is a need for filling a dental canal, we plan and start treatment.
The canals are often curved and have a small diameter, which makes filling difficult. Therefore, it is important to determine the passage length in order to avoid complications after treatment. We establish the working length with the help of an X-ray. We use digital X-rays, which allows us to quickly get a high-definition image and examine it in detail.
Endodontic treatment involves several stages:
- We induce anesthesia in the area around the tooth so that you do not experience any discomfort during the procedure.
- We drill a small hole in the upper part of the tooth to access the internal cavity. We remove diseased tissues then clean and disinfect the inner chamber.
- The cleaned root passage is filled with an elastic material and a medicine designed to prevent infection.
- If necessary, the hole is temporarily sealed until a permanent filling with a crown is made.
- After completing the canal cleaning, we recommend a re-X-ray to make sure the procedure was successful.
The treatment duration depends on the tooth because each of them has a different number of canals. Canal cleaning and filling take from 30 minutes to 1 hour on average.
