Fluoride Treatment in Forest Hills, Queens

To maintain oral health, it is not enough only to follow oral hygiene and take steps to prevent tooth decay. You need to periodically strengthen teeth weaknesses with mineral components that nourish the dentin structure. If this is overlooked, there is a risk of wear, damage, and destruction of the tooth crown. This is a big no-no which will require serious dental treatment.

Fluoride treatment deserves special attention to make teeth stronger and prevent the detrimental scenario described above.

What is Dental Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride treatment is a procedure focused on the outer tooth surface. Its intention is to strengthen the enamel and protect the oral cavity from the development of serious dental diseases.

Fluoride teeth treatment refers to therapeutic dentistry, not cosmetic. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends doing this procedure every 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on oral health. If you are at high risk of cavities, your dentist may also prescribe a fluoride rinse or gel for regular use at home.

Why Strengthen Tooth Enamel?

Demineralization is a process leading to the enamel losing useful minerals (primarily calcium), which influence its integrity and strength. Since teeth withstand a tremendous load daily (i.e. chewing and temperature changes), it is considered normal that tooth enamel wears down throughout a lifetime.

The main causes of enamel demineralization:

  • The accumulation of organic acids and pathogens due to insufficient oral hygiene.
  • An unhealthy diet with a lot of sweets.
  • A general lack of calcium in the body and age-related changes.
  • Low fluoride content in the drinking water you consume.

Who Needs Fluoride Treatment?

We recommend providing this procedure to our patients with increased tooth sensitivity and a predisposition to cavities.

Coating teeth with fluoride gives good results with enamel restoration after whitening. The manipulation is carried out before whitening and after hygiene procedures.

Fluoride treatment can also be prescribed if it is necessary to:

  • Protect the internal tooth tissues against the penetration of microorganisms from an external aggressive environment.
  • Prevent teeth damage caused by cavities in children over 6 years old.
  • Conduct treatment in adults with injuries and wedge-shaped defects.
  • Process the surface of a native tooth before installing dental crowns.
  • Prolong the service life of replacement elements; including fillings made of composite photopolymer materials, as well as prostheses and implants.

Preventive fluoride treatment is safe and even beneficial for pregnant women. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends fluoride treatment for all children as soon as their teeth begin to grow. Doing this will aid in prevention of cavities, pain, and future dental infections.

Procedure Techniques

  1. During the simple procedure, the doctor applies fluoride preparations to the teeth for 5-15 minutes. The dentist uses a special mouthguard that repeats the shape of the teeth. For the fluoride ions to penetrate the tooth enamel as deeply as possible, it is recommended to go through this procedure up to 10-15 times (as prescribed by your dentist).
  2. Using fluoride varnish. The material is applied with a brush to the enamel surface and then dried. A thin layer of varnish hardens on the teeth, forming a fluoride-sealing protective film on the enamel.
  3. “Deep”. This involves the use of a special solution which contains calcium and other mineral components.

Fluoride Treatment at VIP Dental Care Clinic

There are several techniques used in teeth enamel remineralization. If there are no contraindications, the final method is decided after assessing the state of your teeth’s enamel coating. During the examination, the doctor will visually inspect the condition of your tooth enamel and the overall state of your oral cavity, then determine the need to cover the teeth with a mineral base.
